Why are eye exams important?

As one of the leading optometrists in the Hunter Region, The Eye Place provides that much sought after personalised service for clients. As the owners, we are much more than your local eye specialists, we are the faces you will see when you visit our practice.

Each member of our team takes the time to get to know our clients, along with their eye history and endeavor to meet their needs at each and every visit. Adam along with Tania and Sam, make the process of having your check-up as well as getting glasses effortless because you deal with the same people for every part of the process.

Check-ups though are not just for those that wear glasses. It is important that every person has regular check-ups of their eyes as this is a critical part of a person’s health check process, as eye exams can detect other major health issues such as diabetes.

It is important to maintain regular eye check-ups from an early age. They are critical because many vision threatening eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration or cataracts have no or minimal symptoms until the disease has progressed. Regular check-ups can detect early signs of these diseases as well as many other health problems.

There is no such thing as too young, too old or too healthy for an eye exam. So, to give you a very general guide, we’ve compiled the below chart as to when exams should be carried out throughout your lifetime.

AGEFREQUENCY OF EYE EXAMINATION
6 Months1 examination around this age
2 Years1 examination around this age
4 – 5 Years1 examination before commencing primary school
6 – 20 YearsAnnually
21 – 60 YearsEvery two years
60+ YearsAnnually

There are many other factors to consider when looking after your eye health. Such as family medical history, working conditions or even pre-existing medical conditions, as these factors may impact the frequency of when you should be having your eye exams completed. Not to worry though, because with Adam’s extensive experience we can tailor an eye care plan just for you.
